The story of Epli Sideri

A look back
Epli Sideri’s story started back in 2015 when the two brothers Kristian and brothers Kristian and Karl Magnus started making apple juice and cider on the family farm at Sekse in Hardanger. The two brothers then formed the company Hardangergutane. A short time After start-up, Kristian’s wife Inger joined the company. She is a good and versatile lady who comes from Stavanger. It all started in the barn in the old farm building on the family farm at The six choir brothers both grew up on the south side of Sørfjorden. With the simple production equipment and great enthusiasm, they started up. After a few years, Hardangergutane outgrew the farm building and moved into larger premises in an old fruit warehouse at Børve. In 2021, Inger and Kristian bought a new and larger farm at Sekse, where they short time they have done extensive work planting new orchards, and after a short time they also started planning the construction of a new production room. The garden is close to the fjord and mountains in idyllic surroundings. 100 meters above sea level in the middle of one of the country’s largest and oldest fruit districts – Hardanger. The farm used to grow apples, pears, plums and morels. Today, they only focus on apples and have planted different varieties on a larger scale. All the apples have their own distinctive taste from the sweet, to the more acidic and healthy. This is a result of the climate and the nutrient-rich soil in the area. The apples are carefully harvested by hand and processed for use in both In 2023, Karl Magnus decided to leave the company and Inger and Kristian took over the operation.

A new era
In the summer of 2024, Hardangergutane enters a new and exciting era when production is moved back to Sekse in new and more adapted premises. The sum of these changes meant that we wanted to create a clearer identity, and the name Epli Sideri was born. Epli is an old word for apple that was used in everyday speech in Hardanger in earlier times and originates from Norse times.

On January 2024, Inger started the world’s first Pommelier education under the auspices of Fagskulen Vestland in Ulvik. As a Pommelier student, you learn to taste. Sensory, i.e. how to smell and taste cider in order to describe the smells and tastes correctly based on style, cider classification systems, process methods, terroir, history and culture both nationally and globally. Method and quality are the main part of the study. This will give Inger the title of Pommelier. We look forward to taking this knowledge further in the development of our products.
